3 "Be's" for Recommendation Letters

Dear Scholar, In the spring students often apply for summer and fall internships, jobs and other opportunities. The application process may entail a letter of recommendation. Students sometimes worry about asking someone to write on their behalf, feeling like they would be a bother. Don’t do it! Focus instead on bringing your recommendation writer aboard your team. - Be positive - Take on a positive and enthusiastic attitude; about yourself as a candidate and about the opportunity you’re applying for. Take time to write down all the ways you are a good fit, identifying examples to illustrate it. - Be helpful - Try to meet in person. Share your enthusiasm and qualifications for the position or program. Provide printed materials in an organized way (use a labeled file folder or large envelope). Fill in your information so they don’t have to do it. Include a copy of your resume. Have a draft of key points to share, including when and how you met each other. Identify examples of your experience, qualifications, coursework and GPA relevant to the opportunity to which you are applying. - Be complete - Pay attention to the guidelines for recommendations. Right before the recommendation is due check in with your recommendation writer to be sure they have everything they need. Send a “thank you” for writing the recommendation. Let them know how it turns out. Keep them informed about each application and the outcome - remember they are part of your team. These are just a few suggestions for starting off on a positive note. For more simply visit the Career Services web page of any college you like or attend. And remember to be positive, helpful and complete. All my best, Dr. J.
